Took a drive down to St Helliers tonight to check out the annual toy run, loads of cool rides and the weather was perfect. Stayed just long enough to say hi to some friends, bash down a hot dog and a coke and do a few laps. Congrats to Tim who got his 29 legal - this was it's first outing with paperwork. Anyone who's gone through the process knows how good this feels and the smile on his face was evidence. Car looks RAD Tim! So much to look at - here's a few shots, imagine the salvation army band playing hits to murder yourself to and you could almost be there!

Born With Too Much Shit is happening this Saturday 26th at Salvation Kitchen.
The focus is on motorcycles hotrods and rock n roll - and of course eating yourself stoopid. Things kick off at 8am with swapmeet action and bands start at 12. The Rum Coves (one of my favourite bands in Auckland) are playing, as are Ed Gains and The Human Remains (which Andrew plays in along with Kurt and the sparkly Rossco ex Demi Whores) and also The Ruby Union, my new band with Bryan and Damon who I played in Deadflowers with and Chris Long on Drums. Bar opens at 12ish. There's parking round the back and preferential hot rod / motorcycle parking out front. Slow roasted pork belly sandwiches will be attending too! It twas a cursed sump, grinding on the driveway on ever exit/entry. Smashed to shitery on Sids driveway and then the final blow, the sump plug fell out while in motion. I A transpoter ride home (better than a seized engine on the harbour bridge!) and a call to Dave Graham had things sorted. Plug moved, sump sectioned, oilabotamy successfull!

We shot this today, Andrew did good rolling round and round in the dirt for a couple of hours with the camera while I chewed the fat with Mike. We've been trying to do this shoot for 2 months but bands, business and weather have fucked it up - well worth the wait, I never realised how long Mike actually spent building the car. He bought it in 68 and his first show was in 75. This thing owned the show circuit for the next couple of years. Full feature in the much "anticipated" issue 5.

OK so we went and saw Brother Ashton play with Head Like A Hole in Auckland last night. Killer show - real good vibe. A twinkle was definately in Booga's eye, M Franklin Brown was on diamond thunderous form, Tallbeast had nice flufy hair and sounded huge, Regan got lifted up and floated round and was generally ripping and Brother Ashton avoided black eyes, has adopted a new vacant Charlie Manson appearance and rocked hard. After the show Sid and I got to talking about the speed holes he's been drilling in his Triumph head. It's mental. He reckons if this thing doesn't wheelstand he's buying golf clubs. I told him to get a jet ski. So I went home pretty early and Sid went out. This morning he texted me with the following "I need to drill speed holes in my hangover" I agree. Fashion Week swarf.

Greg Stokes came out today in the 32. I do believe he may have "got rubber" in at least two and possibly three gears on departure passing the po-lice station across the road. Just quietly, the detectives love a 32 roadster with a quick change failing to get full traction after a quick coffee and bite to eat at Salvation Kitchen. The 383 is sounding so damn good and as always the visuals were great. Sounds like Hot Rod mag is doing a retrospective from the acrhives which is cool and will be a killer read no doubt. He carefully disassembles and rearanges the retired luxury item and creates something that is the materialisation of what was in his head and it is good and it makes other mens heads explode with excitement joy. She's all fuckin' go round here I can tell you! We got a bunch done on the weekend - here's a brief roundup.
Head Like A Hole Album is out TODAY so Andrew spent Friday doing press for that. Go buy Blood Will Out NOW! I took the T Bucket out to the testing station and got the vin number on the chassis and had a very cool drive on a beautiful winters day and while I was there saw this sweet 56 BMW. The Earl fork blows my mind. Sunday we did a photoshoot at Salvation Kitchen cafe with the Scroungers car club for a feature we're running in issue 5 on the 10th anniversary. Another beautiful and chilly afternoon. Album release party tonight so we're heading off there now - for the middle of winter there's plenty on!

This is Grant from Pakuranga Radiators 428 Cobrajet Mustang. When he started it I did a little bit of wee in my pants, sounds great and is a tough car. The cobra/mustang mural on the side is epic too. Grant and Dennis just built me a new radiator for the T Bucket - so nice and a great feeling to know that bitch isn't going to start spewing boiling water all over me next time I hit the highway. I usually wear sunglasses when I drive but I'd rather be wearing them for the purposes of sun and wind that to prevent scolding of the eyes!

There's was plenty to do to get it running again - Chris Piaggi & John Pavlovich spent a couple of weeks going right through the little roadster and getting it ready for Mike to drive again at the Blowout this year. I love the song Expressway To Your Skull, by Sonic Youth - the words are killer. Man I wish Sonic Youth had been at Hampton Downs. They weren't - but this stuff was.

Head Like A Hole have been recording their new album, heré's brother Ashton laying it down proper. From what I've heard of it, the record is going to be a monster.

I had the exhaust noise test done on the T Bucket yesterday. The great news is that it's only TWICE too loud. Evidently 108 decibels is not acceptable. Oh well.

Holy shit it's been a full-on couple of weeks. We finished issue 4, got 2 new OnePercent T shirts designed and printed (they'll be for sale on the site soon) got our new stickers happening, made a OnePercent radio ad, Andrew supported Stone Temple Pilots with Head Like A Hole, we went to the Scroungers Hot Rod Blowout AND The Nostalgia Drags.

First time out for Grease and Andrews new dragster. Total Mind Blower.

The Lucas-Sanders dragster was Top Eliminator runner up in '67 behind Bob Rossiter and his Pirate before Grease and Andrew campaigned it for many years.

Mike Udjar's roadster has not been running for 32 years, very special moment to see the man behind the wheel of his machine driving into the Blowout.

Chris Piaggi's Monkey Mobile took off it's coat of spare parts, old magazines, dust and junk and came out to play.

We made a new OnePercent radio ad for Hauraki - listen out for it this week.

Andrew plays guitar in Head Like A Hole - this is the view from the stage at Vector areana, sound check for the Stone Temple Pilots show.

Making drinks in the radio Hauraki studio - this is what the bFM studio uesd to look like.

Nostalgia Drags went down yesterday - beautifull day (apart from the cops busting people at entrance to the service centre on the motorway). Graeme Macneil's truck looked and sounded great with new injection set up.

Flying High Again

Friday we fucked-on down to Hamiltron for some party road trip action. First stop was Sushi and saki, then we dropped into Engine Components where they know a thing or two about repairing and dialing in engines as well as hard chroming and alloy repair. They have a range of mills, surface grinders, line boring and honing machines straight out of the 40's and still in operation. They specialise in aircraft engines and planes sort of need their engines so you know EC understand a thing or two about quality work.

We also checked out their sister company Pacific Aerospace where they make planes from scratch. It was unreal and I can't even start to explain the level of detail, organisation and skill involved.

Next up we stopped in at Sutty's to check out his SWEEEEEET triumph chop.

Full feature in next issue. Then the piggies needed more food so we stopped in for a curry. The banquet sounded good but it turned out there was enough food involved to feed 4 large men. Staggering out into the street afterwards Andrew was sweating and moaning about having the Curry Worry and I tried to drive in the dark and rain with butter chicken weeping out of my tear ducts.

Sunday we shot down to Shed 5 for the first Sunday Slam. The drizzel kept some homo's at home but there was a good vibe going on and good on the buggers - looking forward to the next one.

Hi Guys, happened to be browsing in a book shop in New Plymouth

recently and found your mag. First time I've seen it - - great mag.

Loved your story on VANDAL and Max Baker, I've been around a while and

know most of these guys. Loved your story on David Wirtinen, cos I

thought I knew most of the kiwis who have raced on the salt. Way back

in 79 Howard Smith, pictured in the mag with Max, built the front axle

of the little A roadster I took to the salt way back in then. We took

the Kiwi A Salt roadster, which I designed and built with a bit of

help from my friends, back for the 60th Speedweek, and finally came

home with a record.

Any chance of getting 1st and 2nd copies of your mag?

The Bum Fire

It was the early nineties at Meremere and The Bum was a regular sight come race day.
On this particular day some would say "those involved" went too far - others may beg to differ.
Here we see The Bum on fire, set free and really fucking some people off.
The fireman is not angry, he sees the humour but must do his duty. His hose is his friend.
The other chap is confused, drunk, hot and dribbling shit.
"Bum's on fire... what's you're name mate? You like being a fireman? Yeahhhh nahhhh"

Fists flew that day, drag racers vowed never to return, The Bum smoldered and staggered to the side of the road after "those involved" attempted to negotiate its burned and smoking husk back up the motorway.

Whether you were there or cared - it happened. Big ups to The Bum.

So we got a new dog after the premature demise of Doobie (R.I.P) and she just loves being sung (sang?) to. The other day I was in the lounge singing her a sweet tune when she got so excited that she pissed all over me. Well, now I know that exact feeling brothers and sisters for it was only yesterday that I got an e-mail from Paul at Famous Pacific Shipping informing me a bunch of gear I had ordered for The Bong had finally cleared customs - I pissed my pants on the spot. Then cleaned myself up and raced out to pick it all up: Haifley Bros seat and P-Pad, Front Street Cycle bars and fender, some new rubber and that 45 Springer.
God I'm happy. Now what would be awesome is if someone could point me in the direction of a clean 21" wheel/brake set-up for the bitch.

Who's the boss?

So like I said, my steering shaft is near impossible to find an aftermarket boss for and the wheel I wanted to run sure wouldn't fit on the old boss. The old wheel was fairly gay - too fat, too big and cracked in a few places. Answer - an adapter that allows me to use the existing boss that fits the steering shaft spline AND use the very cool vintage "The Superior 500" wheel that I wanted to run. I would have been happy with function but Graeme at Mac's Speed had other ideas - this looks good, is way safer and works a treat. It is a two piece item that sandwiches the old boss, makes it look pretty and fits the spline and steering wheel. The screws go right through from front to back via the original wheel mounting screws and the new wheel mounting screws also thread right into the meaty mack piece. I gave it a polish this morning and put it all back together.

I went out to Mac’s Speed & Equipment yesterday, Graeme’s machining up a piece that will allow me to use my existing steering boss with a different wheel. More on this tomorrow once I get it all back together and get some pics happening. While I was out there I spied this lot. Oh jeez – it’s enough to make you drool and get a little light headed. Or maybe flat headed? What we have here is a brand new French military block – they were using an engine designed in the thirties right up until the eighties. This was due in part to the simplicity of the design, less parts, ease of maintenance in the field and probably cause they had a shit load of them. Eventually they decided to sell their inventory of these things and now So Cal has pretty much everything. They are not exactly like American flathead blocks but do fit all the same parts and the price is comparatively pretty good once you take into account buying and crack testing a few old blocks before you get one worth keeping. Then from up on a shelf Graeme pulls down a direct drive Hilborn injection setup. This is going in Greg Roy’s 17 foot wooden hulled hydroplane. I don’t know about you but this sort of stuff gets me pretty excited.

Got the car going on Thursday night after having it apart for the last 6 months - just in time to make the pilgrimage up to Kumeu for the weekend. Andrew followed in the practical car with the elaborate OnePercent stall. One table, one tent, two broken chairs, one stool and a bunch of magazines. So good to be on the road again and the weather was insane. We set up in a new area that was coined Retro Junction. The area was run by Squeak Bell and Wellsey with stalls being organised by Rachel from Retro Vixen. A very cool array of invited cars made for the joint being one of the coolest areas of the whole event. Evan J from the Scroungers DJ'd well into the night as Whakatane club members drank and asked him if he could a) improve the sound and b) play something else. I thought it sounded great!
One of the highlights was a visit from Garth Hogan to the OnePercent tent. If you read the Max Baker article in issue 3 you'll remember Howard Smith's recollections of Max pulling Garth from his still rolling drag car after he got stuck climbing out the window trying to avoid being burnt to death. Garth was stoked to read the story, he said he's told the story many times but was unsure after all these years whether that's how it actually happened. Garth's currently working on a book about him and his late farther Ron - can't wait to see that.

Here we go!!!

With the rest of the car away at upholstery I've been spending far too much time in the workshop finishing off the engine. It was rebuilt when I first put the car together so while it's out this time it's really just cosmetics. Stripped everything back and repainted in the same gold that I did the dash. Hand brush painted the rocker covers and stacks to tie it all together. New gaskets, new sump, painted all the accessories and replaced most bolts/nuts with shiny stuff. Have also drilled the intake and fitted a PCV valve hidden out back rather than putting holes in the B&C covers. Upholstery should be finished tomorrow and I'm picking it up on a transporter. Saturday it's all going back together, which is pretty damn exciting. Engine - done. Trans - done. Chrome - done. Hurst shifter - done. Paint chassis - done. Upholstery - done tomorrow!

Would love to be at the Jalopy Dust Up this weekend too but the inside of the garage will be my vista until the car is back on the road.

The plan is to drive up to the Kumeu Hot Rod Show next week 15th and 16th Jan - we'll be there at least Saturday with issue three of OnePercent for sale so stop by and say hello - if we're conscious.

After hitting up the Kings Arms on New Years eve, Andrew's playing with Head Like A Hole this Saturday in Nelson so get along if you're in town. Their new single Swagger Of Thieves is RAD.
